UBC Students create massive wall of love to protest 50% tuition increase

VANCOUVER — Students at UBC’s Vancouver campus are building a wall of love for their university along the path the Board of Governors will take to their meeting Thursday morning where they will officially respond to the University administration’s request to raise international tuition roughly 50% over the next three years.

With the University insisting the new revenue–which is currently slated to go toward a slush fund for “strategic projects”–is needed to boost UBC’s “excellence” and prestige, the AMS and student group the Calendar have teamed up to ask students what they actually think makes UBC excellent.

Using the hashtag #ThisIsWhyILoveUBC, the AMS and Calendar are collecting post-its from students expressing their love for UBC. The post-its will be posted along the path the 21 Governors will take to their Thursday morning meeting on campus at the UBC Alumni Centre to ensure student voices are front and center as they decide what conditions to place on the University’s request to increase tuition.

The #ThisIsWhyILoveUBC event is part of the AMS’ Afford UBC campaign protesting UBC’s attempt to raise international student tuition 50% over the next 3 years, on top of a 10% increase approved last year. If the increase is approved, an average degree would cost international students over $150,000. The AMS has been seeking to block the increase and ensure that if approved it dedicates sufficient funding for student financial aid and diversity rather than going into an unaccountable centralized fund controlled solely by the University’s administration.

The post-its will be collected and posted on boards in the AMS Student Nest on campus until Wednesday evening and the post-its will be put along the Governors’ path on Thursday morning. Media is encouraged to attend.
