Purple and Yellow Key Information
The Board of Directors has changed the required number of hours to obtain a P&Y key for the sake of clarity. Previously, members had been told that they had to volunteer 3 hours and sometimes 6 hours. The official policy is as follows: six hours of logged volunteering are required after membership has been obtained in order to get a P&Y key. The memberships may still be purchased for 15$, or a free membership can be obtained by volunteering 6 hours. So if all you want is a P&Y key then you have two options: buy a membership, then volunteer 6 hours (two Tuesdays) or volunteer 12 hours (four Tuesdays, two for the membership, two for the key).
Bike Co-op Blog
The Bike Co-op will now keep a blog instead of updating the News section of the website. The website will now be reserved for (mostly) static information. The blog can be found here.

Marketcargo
The Bike Co-op has just launched Marketcargo, an active transportation demonstration project using the Co-op's fleet of cargo bikes. We are offering free home delivery (within a specific catchment area) of produce purchased at the Kitsilano and Main Street Farmers Markets, as well as bicycle delivery of the UBC Farm CSA boxes. In addition to the delivery, we staff a booth at these markets to offer free bike inspections, some tune-ups, and sale of baskets and racks. Finally, Marketcargo will be harvesting organic produce from the Farmers on 57th garden project at the George Pearson Centre and hauling it by bike to the Main Street market for sale and/or home delivery.
Why is the program free? Because we are committed to demonstrating that bikes are an easy and efficient way to haul heavy loads and make your life even more car-free. With this program, the Co-op is proud to be promoting active forms of transportation, reducing motor vehicle dependence, and supporting local food security. If this excites you as much as it excites us, don't hesitate to come and volunteer!
We are looking for volunteers to:
Tune up market patrons'
bikes
Ride our cargo bikes on delivery runs
Set up and take
down our booth at the Farmers Markets
Explain what we do and why
Market Schedule:
Main Street Market: Wednesdays 3 - 7pm
UBC Farm Market:
Saturdays 9am - 1pm
Kitsilano Market: Sundays 10am - 2pm
Catchment Areas for Delivery:
Our Kits delivery area extends East from Alma and Dunbar to Granville, and South from the beaches to King Edward. Our Main Street delivery area goes East from Granville to Commercial, and North from 16th ave. to Powell St. We'll also go as far as Seymour St. downtown. Here are two links to Google Maps that outline the areas: Kits and Main St..
For more information, or to volunteer, contact Kevin Cooper or Martin Gunst at ubc.bikecoop@gmail.com.
Thanks to the North Vancouver Mountain Equipment Co-op and the Knights of Columbus for helping us collect over 100 recycled bikes! For our bike drive on Saturday June 6th 2009, MEC generously donated their parking lot as a location for people to drop in and recycle their unwanted bicycles. Bike Co-op board members volunteered their time to collect the bikes and fill the truck that was supplied and driven by the Knights of Columbus, who transported the bike shipment to our UBC location. The donated bikes will be refurbished for sale in the Bike Kitchen, used in the Purple and Yellow public bike fleet, and other programs of the Co-op. Best of all, these bikes will end up back on the road instead of in the landfill!

Thanks to the North Shore Bike Shop for their generous donation of old stock bike parts!

I know this has been mentioned in the past, but since its so cool it'll be mentioned again: a Cycle Route Planner for Vancouver! As a proect that started at UBC, this Google-Map based site, with the use of data from Translink, allows you to plan a cycling-friendly route from point A to B. It will give you some useful information such as the estimated time it takes, the places where you might have to pedal a little harder, and even the vegetation cover of the route. If you haven't already, check it out!
If you have a few moments, please help out a studnet in Amsterdam who is doing a bike-related survey:
I am a student at the University of Amsterdam doing research on cycling behaviour around the world. One of the objectives of this research is to find out what persuades people to use their bicycle instead of other means of transportation. What's more, we are hoping to be able to use this research to convince governments all over the world to actively promote biking; both in resources as well as city planning.
The survey is here
Tuesday:
5-6pm: Board Meetings. Feel free to drop by and see how we run as an organization.
6-9pm. Come join us in the building of our community fleet. We just released a new batch of shiny new Purple and Yellows last week! More to come this week! Volunteering will get you a key (3hrs), and a free membership (6hrs). Dinner will be served for all volunteers.
Wednesday: 6-9pm clinics. Learn a different aspect of bike repair
each week. Space may be limited since we are sharing with BYOB, so
come early! The schedule for the next 4 weeks are as follows:
Oct
15 - Brakes (overview of types/basic theory; adjustments)
Oct 22 -
Wheels (truing and flat repair)
Oct 29 - Bearings (Hubs, headsets,
bottom brackets, etc)
Nov 5 - Shifting and Drivetrain (Mostly
adjusting deraileurs and shifters)
(sorry about the error in the
dates from last week!)
Friday: Free shop time for members! Last Friday of the month is Critical Mass. A group leaves from the north side of the SUB at around 4:45. Get your bike tuned before riding off!
Build Your Own Bike (BYOB): Wednesdays and Sundays nights. Learn how to build a bike from the ground up with the help of experienced mechanics and access to used and discounted new parts. Email bikekitchen@gmail.com for more details or to sign up. There is a waitlist so sign up early to get a spot soon!
Rides: We are starting our group rides again. They'll most likely be weekend trips, weather permitting. The emphasis on these rides is fun - so don't worry about having to be in top-notch shape to participate. If you'd like to know when the next ride is, join the group here

Was a huge success. Thanks to everyone for coming out. Despite it raining non-stop the entire morning, we still had a lot of people stop by for free breakfast and to hang out. The meeting and party were also very successful. We now have a faster, stronger, and better board of directors. Look for exciting things to happen in the future. For some reason a lot of the board members are engineers. Can you say robot bicycles? Stay tuned for an introduction to the new board in the next Bike News. Check the attached photo for a picture of presidents from the last ten years of the Bike co-op.
The Bike Co-op has sweet new T-shirts for sale! $10 will get you one, check the attachment for the design. "My Bike takes me places school never could".
Yep, we got one. It is awesome. Weare trying to come up with a name for it, so if you have any ideas send it to us, and you will win a prize or something. Check the attachment for a photo of said Bakfiet. This is the first bike in what will become our cargo fleet, which will be available for rental to AMS and University groups in the fall!

skill levels, and all income classes. In his talk, Prof. Pucher describes the approach used in these three countries to promote cycling for everyone and for all trip purposes. He focuses on six categories of policies and programs: extensive systems of separate cycling facilities, intersection modifications and priority bicycle traffic signals, traffic calming of neighborhoods, safe and convenient bike parking, coordination and integration of cycling with public transport, traffic education and training for both cyclists and motorists, and traffic laws that favor cyclists and pedestrians. The key to the success of cycling policies in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany is the coordinated implementation of this multi-faceted, mutually reinforcing set of policies. Precisely because the policies are sensitive to the different needs of different social groups, they also succeed in making cycling possible for virtually everyone.

~The Story~
So this past sunny Saturday afternoon seven sushi keen cyclists
rolled off the UBC campus with a plan. We hucked it down the
Marine Dr. hill to Spanish Banks and cruised along the beach front
into Kits.Re-entering the built environment via 3rd Ave, we rode
through the characteristically colourful Kitsilano, east to Larch,
where we turned south to Broadway. Our first stop was Dan which I have
visited before and liked, but being still early they were
closed.Hungry, we rode quickly over the hill along 8th to Cypress,
and then down to 4th where we were eager to slam back some shochu at
the Zakkushi Charcoal Grill, a very cool little place with an
authentically chaotic decor.Alas, they were also closed. But luckily
we were riding and rolling in Vancouver, a metropolis world renowned
for an abundance of fresh fish.
The Octopus's Garden was just
a few short blocks further down Cypress, on Cornwall in fact. But they
were closed too!Let this be a lesson to us all:a sushi dinner will
not be made available to the restaurant customer before 5:00 or
5:30pm! Luckily we were on bikes, and happy. With a quick
dash back up Cypress to 1st we had landed our first roll at Kishu
Sky, where we met up with two latecomers.I had the Rainbow Roll,
which was delicious!By this time, Zakkushi had opened (hurrah!) so we
vacated Kishu and made tracks back up to 4th.We took over the place
(it only seats about 20 people, max) and ordered BBQ skewers of a
variety of meat flavours, and mushrooms and mochi for the
vegetarians.Watch out for salty flavour in the plum drinks, but don't
let that stop you from ordering them: they're good!Next stop was
Opera Sushi on Broadway so we rode back up the Cypress route to 8th
and then skirted east to Pine. We found the place, jam packed with
Opera LPs and with the audio booming! And to take it further,
they offer their rolls in a whole variety of rice types, each
offering it's own respective health benefit!I recommend the Miss
Saigon Roll.By this time we felt the evening was beginning to close
in, so we decided to make one final stop: the famous Tojo's
Restaurant (reputed to be the best, and certainly one of the first
Japanese restaurants in Vancouver).10th Ave was our choice for the
trek east to Spruce St where we ejected our bikes and were ushered in
to our table. The sashimi was off the hook, and the Northern Lights
Roll spun us all into a tizzy. Or maybe that was the last
bottle of sake.I don't remember..

The start of this year has been great for the Bike Co-op. In addition, we have been seeing record turnouts at Tuesday night Work Parties, and Wednesday Night Repair Clinics. The start of this year has been great for the Bike Co-op. The Bike Co-op has already participated in a number of great events, including Farm Aid, the Sustainability Fair, and Club Days, to name a few. In addition, we have been seeing record turnouts at Tuesday night Work Parties, and Wednesday Night Repair Clinics. We have a mostly newish Board of Directors who are doing a great job. Check out their profiles in the "about us" section for more info. Most recently we got a donation from Vancity of 10 brand new cruiser bikes to add to our flourishing Purple and Yellow Bike fleet. These are the same bikes from Vancity's bike share program. You may have seen these bikes on TV, they are totally famous! Also, look for an article on us and these bikes coming out in the Ubyssey soon! We will be painting these bikes and taking a lot of pictures this upcoming Tuesday! So you should come! Hey Gang,
Summer is almost upon us again,
and that means great bike riding weather! Here is a brief update of
what the Co-op has been up to, and what the near future holds for us.
Our annual Bike to School Day event, and our Annual General
meeting were both huge successes. We have elected an almost entire
new board, with the only returning member from last year being
Johnty. Come by and meet the new board at the next meeting or event!
We recently participated in the "Vote with Your Dollar"
fair at UBC, and at the Earth Day celebration at the Botanical
gardens. These were two great events with great messages and vendors.
We had a lot of fun meeting new like minded people.
Tuesday
and Wednesday night programs will be going strong throughout this
summer. Our new board member Lucas will be running Tuesday nights,
and Johnty will continue to teach the Wednesday night repair clinics
(After he gets back from South Africa on May 18). RSVP to the
Wednesday night clinic at ubc.bikecoop@gmail.com.
We recently
bought two new books for the Co-op Library, Atomic Zombie's Bicycle
Builder's Bonanza, and The Bicycling guide to Bicycle Repair and
Maintenance.
Our new space is mostly done, and the next and
final step will be to set-up the Co-op's very own work space,
complete with professional tool sets and stands.
The Co-op is
now on facebook.com and myspace.com. So if you are on either these
networks friend us.
We look forward to seeing everyone this
summer. Come out to the work parties, come see the new space, or just
come to hang out!
Cheers,
Bike Co-op
January 26!

March 29, 2005
It's UBC Bike to school Day!
The week
ending April 1st has been designated UBC Responsible Consumption
Week. A big part of our personal consumption of energy and natural
resources comes from our use of buses and personal cars for
transportation. The bicycle represents the perfect foil for our
dependency on oil, and brings with it a number of social,
environmental and health benefits. To end Responsible Consumption
Week with a bang, the AMS Bike Co-op is encouraging students, faculty
and staff to ride their bicycles to campus on Friday, April 1st for
UBC Bikes To School Day.
Bike Co-op members will be out on the
University Boulevard bike route on the morning of April 1st, handing
out treats and bike-schwag to cyclists making their way on to campus.
We'll be holding a bike festival on the North end of the Student
Union Building between 12 and 2 pm featuring chopper bikes, ebikes, a
pedal powered sound system, bike-blender smoothies and more. And the
UBC Bike Kitchen will be offering free shop time and instruction all
day, as well as a 20% discount on locks, fenders, helmets, lights,
etc. everything you need to get yourself and your bike ready for the
summer.
With its numerous bike routes, gorgeous scenery and
mild weather, Vancouver is the perfect city to bike in year-round.
And more bikes on the street makes for cleaner air, a safer city and
fitter, friendlier communities. This Friday leave the smog box at
home. Keep your U-pass in its sheath. Join the rest of UBC's
cyclists, show your appreciation for our beleaguered mother earth and
bring your bike to school.
See you riding!

So y'all, its spring break at the bikecoop, just like at UBC. No classes, work parties, etc. We are all taking a break. O, and so is the bike kitchen! Everything will start back up again next week! See you then...
Janurary, 23 2005
Indeed, we are back in action. Crash courses, P&Y nights, and BYOB are up and running.
December 13, 2004
Oh yeah, don't forget: calendars! You can get 'em at the Bike Kitchen of course, Sprouts!, and at Our Community Bikes. $14 bucks each. If we actually recieve any proceeds they will go towards keeping our programs up and running!

Well, exams and papers abound, and we love it,
don't we? Everyone should know that all Wed night clinics are
cancelled for Dec; we will start up again in Janurary after school
does. But Tuesday nite workparties are still an excellent place to
release some of that pent up stress that studies show shortens your
life. Come out to the bikecoop work parties, eat great, and LIVE
LONGER!
As well, our nifty calendars will be availible at
selected bike shops soon, we'll let you know when they've been
unleashed!

A few newish things are up: the Programs section now has a write-up for Bike Check, our day-bike-storage program. Edison Woods is on the cd player, and it is fine stuff. Also in the programs section you will find an 'up & comming' section; programs that have a start but are not yet fully realized will live here. As well, a few more pages have been moved over to CSS. The bike hub page is also updated with pics pf the entrance and more general prettyness. Please note that I don't care to check if it looks alright in Internet Explorer; get with it and download Firefox, it's open-source and just o-so-much better. Of course, email the webmaster if somthin' ain't right.
November 3, 2004
But what do we really want to know? The Calendar has been updated with our office hours. Click on 'events' to check it out.
October 15, 2004
The website is currently undergoing a bit of an
overhaul; if you see anything out of whack, report it to the
webmaster.
We've got a new space and some new and old things going on at the
bike hub, stop by and have a look, if you like. Don't forget about
our currently running programs! Tuesday night Work Parrrties,
Wednesday Nite Clinics, BYOB, Saturday Crash Courses; we've got the
week covered! Check out the programs page
for more information.
Also, you should check out our new
events calendar, as well as
email us
if you have a photo for our next up-and-comming real-life calendar.
