FOCUS CLUB (UBC FOCUS CLUB) (President: Yulia Egorova)
WELCOME! We invite all international students to come and make friends, find support, have fun and enjoy Canadian culture and local attractions. We also provide international students with an opportunity to investigate Christianity and the Bible and to experience Christian community. In addition, we offer Christian international students a place for discipleship, fellowship and worship. We do this as we work in partnership with other Christian clubs at UBC. We also act as a link between international students and the local community, advocating for their needs, mobilizing churches and individuals to provide friendship and support for them and inviting those students who are interested to be involved in local churches. WHAT WE DO: We provide a relaxed environment in which international students can make new relationships, experience Canadian hospitality and explore the Christian faith. F.O.C.U.S. stands for Friends of Overseas College and University Students. Knowing how difficult the transition to life in Canada and on the campus can be, we offer friendship, support and encouragement. The Focus Club meets year-round on Fridays at 6:00 p.m. in room #207 (usually, check this page for changes) in the Student Union Building. Here students can enjoy a free dinner, make new friends and share experiences. Usually we have a short message or video followed by a time of Bible study and group discussion. We also have weekly evening Bible studies and a weekly “Conversation Cafe” where students can improve their English in an informal setting. We have monthly outings where we take part in activities such as hiking, skiing and ice skating. We also schedule trips to local attractions such as the Sunshine Coast, Lynn Canyon or local parks. Holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Lunar New Year are times where we invite students to gather for special meals, sometimes in the homes of local families. WHO WE ARE: Our group is made up of students, both undergraduate and graduate, from a number of faculties and many countries in Asia, North America and Africa. We also have staff and alumni as well as volunteers who help out in various ways. We are grateful to to see so many students empowered and impacted over the years. Thaqalayn Muslim Association (President: Ali Alzaid)
The Thaqalayn Muslim Association is a non-affiliated Muslim student association at the University of British Columbia. We are a group of students who work to serve the needs of all students, and Muslims in particular, on campus. The heart and core of al-Thaqalayn Muslim Association (TMA) revolves around the two weighty things, al-Thaqalayn of which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) said: “I have been summoned (by Allah) and the moment is near for me to answer (to die). I leave among you the two weighty things: the Book of Allah the Almighty and my progeny; Allah s book is (like) a rope extending from heaven to earth, and my progeny are the (Ahlul-Bayt). The Merciful informed me that the two will never part, until they come to me at the Pool (of Kawthar in Paradise), I warn you against deserting them.” Upon this foundation, and only this foundation, does TMA rest. TMA is not affiliated with any organization. Nor is it affiliated to a specific Marja Taqleed, rather TMA acknowledges all of them, both the alive (may Allah elevate their stations) and the dead (may Allah bless their souls). On this platform, TMA hopes to: 1) Promote the teachings of the Holy Qur an and the purified Ahlul-Bayt 2) Unite and defend the followers adhering to the Holy Qur an and the Ahlul-Bayt from misconceptions and false propaganda 3) Create bridges of peace, unity, and harmony amongst humankind in general and Muslims in particular On a final note, it is the belief of TMA that all of its members are valuable contributors. We are not a hierarchy of individuals, but are instead a closely-knit group of dedicated students working for the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
