About Singapore Raffles Club (SRC)

The UBC Singapore Raffles Club is a social club which organizes activities throughout the school year to foster friendship among members, and promotes awareness of Singapore among UBC students. We currently have over 100 members from all over the world and encourage everyone to join.
The name "Raffles" refers to Sir Stamford Raffles, a 19th century British civil servant who founded modern Singapore in 1819.

Singapore is located at the tip of the Malay peninsula. The island is 42km in length and 23km in breadth, with an area of 646 square kilometers. Singapore also has about 150.5km of coastline. In comparison, Greater Vancouver has an area of approximately 3300 square kilometers. Singapore has a tropical climate with temperatures reaching 30°C all year round. Besides Monaco, Singapore is the most densely populated independent country in the world.

Singapore has a population of around 4.5 million people, as compared to Greater Vancouver which has a population of around 2 million people. It is a multi racial mixture, comprising of:

As a result, Singapore recognizes four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. English is the language of administration. Malay is the national language. Singaporeans also speak a peculiar brand of English called "Singlish".
