Senate

The UBC senate is the governing body on all University academic matters. Students currently comprise 17 of the 85 senate members.

Senate have the following responsibilities:

  • Determine admission and exam policy;
  • Hear student appeals in matters of academic discipline, academic standing, and admissions;
  • Approve, recommend, and revise courses;
  • Provide and grant degrees;
  • Recommend the creation of faculties, departments, courses, and scholarships;
  • Advise and assist the president in University budget matters;
  • Make recommendations to the Board of Governors.

Student members are responsible for attending senate meetings, as well as sit on a variety of University committees that oversee the above matters.

You are highly encouraged to attend senate meetings.Senate is held at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in the Law Building (Room 102). See the senate website for more details.

The student senate typically meets in AMS Council chambers at 6 p.m. before senate meetings. Anyone is welcome to attend — we are here to voice your concerns to senate — although it is wise to contact the senate Student Caucus Chair in advance.

If you would like to make your voice heard on academic decisions, or if you have any questions relating to the senate, feel free to contact your faculty representative.
