Current Openings:

Operations Committee, Member at Large

  • The Member at Large for the Operations Committee will help look after clubs, bookings, and the AMS Student Nest. The term is effective January 25th, 2017, and will end on April 30th, 2017. Prospective committee members may put their names forward either in person at the next AMS council meeting or by submitting their names beforehand to joannepickford@ams.ubc.ca.

General Information:

  • All committees of Council will have the ability to establish working groups as necessary to allocate the tasks and responsibilities assigned to them
  • Individuals can, with certain exceptions, serve on only one committee at a time as a Student At Large.
  • The position of the Chair will be an unpaid position
  • The terms of reference for each committee will be collectively decided by the members after appointment in September

 

New committees

 

Steering Committee

Composition:

  • President
  • VP Finance
  • Chairs of Standing Committees (X7)
  • Member at Large (X1)
  • Student Services Manager (non-voting)

Duties:

  • Coordinate Society’s goals and recommend a long term strategic plan to Council at the beginning of each fiscal year;
  • Conduct systemic review to ensure all Committees of Council are making progress on their established goals; and
  • Provide regular updates to Council on any oversight on goals.

 

Advocacy Committee

Composition:

  • VP Academic and University Affairs
  • VP External Affairs;
  • Councillors (x5)
  • Members at Large (x5)

Duties:

  • Advocate for the needs of students to the government and the university;
  • Work with the VPs AUA and External to coordinate lobbying efforts;
  • Develop and recommend to Council any policies related to the government or university;
  • Work to make the Society more equitable in its operations;
  • Recommend annual goals to the Steering Committee and be accountable for completing those goals; and

 

Human Resources Committee

Composition:

  • President
  • Councillors (x4)
  • Member at Large
  • Ombudsperson (non-voting)

Duties:

  • Create and enforce the Society’s standards on employment;
  • Recommend annual goals to the Steering Committee and be accountable for completing those goals; and
  • Ensure the equitable and student-friendly treatment of the Society’s employees;
  • Review the operations of the Ombudsperson

 

Finance Committee

Composition:

  • President
  • VP Finance
  • Councillors (x4)
  • Members at Large (X2)

Duties:

  • Allot all funds and grants of the Society;
  • Recommend a budget to Council;
  • Recommend budget modifications to Council;
  • Review short term performance of the Society’s businesses and suggest improvements to the VP Finance;
  • Recommend annual goals to the Steering Committee and be accountable for completing those goals; and
  • Review and make suggestions on proposed changes to Exec compensation
  • Assist the VP Finance in ensuring the financial health of the Society.
  • Review and make suggestions to the implementation for financial systems
  • Oversee the financial management for club

 

Operations Committee

Composition:

  • VP Administration
  • Councillors (x4)
  • Member at Large (x2)

Duties:

  • Recommend direction of the Society’s operations and administration to the VP Administration;
  • Oversee the management and infrastructure of the facilities of SUB;
  • Overseeing the management and policy of bookings and space allocation;
  • Ensure the Society is meeting its sustainability goals and recommend necessary action;
  • Recommend annual goals to the Steering Committee and be accountable for completing those goals; and
  • Establish necessary commissions to regulate the Society’s Clubs, Art collection, and SUB.
  • Oversee the animation of the SUB

 

Student Life Committee

Composition:

  • President
  • VP Administration; Execcom
  • Councillors (x5)
  • Members at Large (x5)
  • Student Services Manager (non-voting)

Duties:

  • Develop and implement the annual student engagement strategy;
  • Provide input on projects brought forward by the Student Services Manager and AMS Events Manager;
  • Recommend annual goals to the Steering Committee and be accountable for completing those goals; and
  • Create initiatives to increase campus spirit.
  • Manage the improvement of Club experience

 

 Governance Committee:

  • VP Academic and University Affairs
  • President
  • Councillors (x4)
  • Members at Large (x2)

Duties:

  • Take stewardship in improving the Code and Bylaws of the Society;
  • Improve the Society’s goals on the best practices for governance;
  • Work on periodic governance reviews of the Society
