AMS Slams Anti-Indigenous Rhetoric

At 11AM on January 22, 2026, One BC MLA Dallas Brodie, Frances Widdowson and Jim McMurty will speak at UBC outside the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre. The three have repeatedly made remarks questioning the existence of student burial sites at residential schools, while minimizing the devastating impact residential school has had on indigenous communities.

The AMS denounces all forms of discrimination and marginalization on campus and categorically condemns this event. We strongly support the rights of anyone who plans to peacefully protest the event.

We are aware some students and community members may feel threatened or targeted by the event, the AMS has several services available to support:

  • Peer Support provides free, confidential peer support, information and guidance in a safe space of non-judgment and acceptance.
  • Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) offers ongoing confidential emotional support to people of all genders affected by sexualized and gender-based violence.
  • Safewalk is a transportation service that accompanies students, staff and visitors who may feel uncomfortable traveling across campus after dark.
