The Alma Mater Society of UBC Vancouver, Canada’s largest student union representing over 60,000 undergraduate and graduate students, stands in solidarity with the BCGEU members on strike, who are asking their employer, the Government of BC, for a fair deal.
By making BC’s student loan service inaccessible and causing delays in the distribution of funds to students across the province, the BCGEU strike has put financial strain on hundreds of students already in precarious financial situations.
Students and public sector workers share common challenges such as the rising cost of living and wages that have not kept up with inflation. Whether it’s providing early childhood education, putting out forest fires, maintaining our highways, supporting people suffering from addition, working in long-term care facilities, or providing technical and scientific support, BCGEU workers are the ones who provide British Columbians with the crucial services we rely on.
We ask that the BC Government come back to the bargaining table with the BCGEU and come to a fair deal that respects the dignity of the workers across the province.
