AMS Statement on the Tragic Events Feb 12th 2026

Dear UBC Community,

We are saddened to share with you all that yesterday evening, a member of the community passed away in the Nest. We speak for all UBC students when we express our sadness and grief, as well as our condolences to the family and friends of the person who passed.

We ask our community to respect the privacy of the individual, and of their family and friends as they face this unimaginable loss. Out of consideration for that privacy, we will not be sharing any further details beyond that the individual who passed was not a UBC student.

We also ask our community to come together to care and support one another as each of us process this tragedy in the ways that best meets our individual needs. The AMS Nest continues to be a space that students and community members trust, and we deeply recognize the impact this public incident has had on our community. We are committed to holding space for one another and to ensuring that students and community members have access to care and support. We would like to take this opportunity to share some additional resources available to UBC students and those impacted. If you are struggling, please lean on these resources, they are specifically here to help you navigate these types of situations:

We encourage students and impacted community members to lean into their networks of support, and connect to help as needed. Students who may need additional academic supports during this time are encouraged to reach out to their faculty advising offices to discuss concessions and other academic resources.

If you or someone you know is feeling hopeless or at risk of harm, call or text 988 at any time to reach the Crisis Helpline or if you or someone else is in immediate danger or at risk of harming yourself or others, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room

We are thankful for the abundant support that UBC, first responders and wider campus community has shown thus far as we collectively navigate this tragic situation.

With care,

The AMS Executive Team
