Here are notes from the regular AMS Council meeting of February 7, 2024:
Standards of Conduct: Council approved Code changes incorporating standards of conduct into the AMS Code and also introducing a Declaration for Councillors to sign, on which they will list all their potential conflicts of interest.
Business Plans: Council approved another Code change to require forms to be filled out when capital projects are being put through so that in future the rationale for such projects will be clear.
And one more tiny Code change: Council fixed the problem created by previous Code changes that both allowed motions to be approved in camera and also prohibited the use of electronic devices in camera. (Councillors will be able to use their devices, but only for voting.)
Bylaw change proposal: Council approved a motion calling for a referendum on a proposed change to the Bylaws, which will require the creation of a financial plan every three years.
Student Community Night: President Ben Du announced Student Community Night, a basketball game jointly organized by the AMS, the Alumni, and UBC Athletics & Recreation as part of this year’s vision of collaboration.
Ferris Wheel! VP Admin Ian Caguiat reported that feedback gathered via an in person Engagement Zone revealed that one thing students want is a ferris wheel at Clubs Fair. Also more seats and study space in the Nest, better washrooms, instructions on using A/V equipment, more cables for A/V equipment, and an easier booking procedure.
Access for Everyone: VP External Josh Kim noted that boothing has been going on for the Access for Everyone campaign to improve transit in Metro Vancouver.
Town Hall and Blue Chip: Managing Director Justin Lieu reported on the Town Hall for staff held the previous week and said work is set to resume on the new Blue Chip location, with the hope that it will be ready by the end of term.
Composite: The composite picture of last year’s Council has appeared on the wall of the Council chambers, and individual Councillors’ photos can be found here:
