Council Summary – March 13, 2024

Here are notes from the regular AMS Council meeting of March 13, 2024:

Personnel Handbooks:  Student at Large Brandyn Marx spoke to Council to oppose a proposed Code amendment that would have changes to AMS personnel handbooks approved at the HR Committee instead of at Council.

Salva Sherif, the chair of the HR Committee, said the idea was not to reduce transparency but to speed up the approval process: the handbooks haven’t been officially updated for over a dozen years.

          Council later approved the amendment.

Other Code and Policy Changes:  Council also approved changes affecting the Affiliates Committee, the Petition Privacy Policy, and the fund supporting External and University advocacy.

Academic Experience Survey: VP Academic & University Affairs Kamil Kanji announced that this year’s Academic Experience Survey has broken the record for responses, surpassing 3,800 (the highest previous number of responses was 3794 in 2014).

Financial Plan: AMS President Ben Du said that with the approval of the bylaw amendment requiring a financial plan, he and the VP Finance, Abhi Mishra, have begun working on one.

Endowment Policy: The VP Finance said he is working on a policy to manage the AMS Endowment.

Fridge: Kathleen Simpson, the Senior Manager of Student Services, said the walk-in fridge at Food Bank is up and running.

Food Bank Busy: Simpson said Food Bank had its busiest day ever just after the Reading Break closure.  In response to a question from Science Councillor Yuki Ichikawa, she said it is difficult to find volunteers to keep the Food Bank open during Reading Break, but to mitigate the situation the Food Bank distributed gift cards.

Next meeting:

The next regular Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, 2024 in the Michael Kingsmill Forum in the Nest at 6 pm.
