October Long Weekend Nest Hours

Council Summary – March 27, 2024

Here are notes from the regular AMS Council meeting of March 27, 2024:

Official Election Results:  Elections Administrator Max Holmes made the elections official by reporting to Council.  Turnout was 21%, with the number of votes cast being the third highest ever.

The new President will be Christian (CK) Kyle.  The VP’s will be Drédyn Fontana (Academic & University Affairs), Gavin Fung-Quon (Finance), Amy Liao (Administration), and Ayesha Irfan (External).  The two Board of Governors reps will be Eshana Bhangu and Kamil Kanji.

The one bylaw referendum (on requiring a three-year financial plan) passed.

Code and Policy Changes:  Council approved changes to do with Resource Groups communication, reviewing the Ombudsperson, allowing those with disabilities to participate in Council meetings, indexing fees to inflation, and managing the Endowment Fund.

A/V Upgrades: AMS President Ben Du talked about plans to upgrade the Nest’s A/V systems, which have not been upgraded since the building opened in 2015.

Celebrations: Council heard that the Just Desserts awards ceremony was a success, and was reminded of the upcoming Awards Gala and the Open Education Resources ceremony.

Closures: Managing Director Justin Lieu said the Flavour Lab and Porch food outlets will be closing for good.

Club membership: VP Admin Ian Caguiat said the Operations Committee has reversed its recent decision to no longer allow non-students to join AMS clubs.  There had been a concern about whether non-AMS members would be covered by AMS policies on sexualized violence and respectful community, but it seems they will be.

Appointments: Council extended Kai Rogers’ term as Speaker for another year and also appointed a new Ombudsperson, Noah Mossey, who will begin May 1.

Next meeting:

The next regular Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2024 in the Michael Kingsmill Forum in the Nest at 6 pm.
