October Long Weekend Nest Hours

Council Summary – May 8, 2019

Council Orientation: Chris Hakim, the new AMS President, welcomed Council and said there would be an orientation for Councillors on the weekend of May 25-26.

Congress 2019: A UBC representative spoke to Council about the national academic conference known as Congress, which is being held this year at UBC for the first time in ten years.  She encouraged Councillors both to attend and to help find volunteers to help run the 2,000 events, many of which will be in the AMS Student Nest.

Appointments: This was the Summer Appointments meeting.  Council filled its committees and named the following chairs:

Advocacy Committee: Cristina Ilnitchi

HR Committee: Riley Ty

Student Life Committee: Kevin Zhang

Governance Committee: Katherine Westerlund

Brewery Committee: Matthias Leuprecht

Some committees are automatically chaired by Executives:

Operations Committee: VP Administration Cole Evans

Finance Committee: VP Finance Lucia Liang

Steering Committee: President Chris Hakim

 

Tiananmen Square: Chris Hakim reported that discussions are underway for an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre.  He added that $5,000 has been allocated to pay for the event and for restoration of the Goddess of Democracy statue.

Professional Governance Act: VP External Cristina Ilnitchi said her office is gathering feedback on the Act to present to the provincial government, and is in touch with the Engineering Undergraduate Society.

Equity Plan: VP External Cristina Ilnitchi said her team is putting together a package to guide where the Equity Plan working group might go.

Constituency Fees: Council directed the new VP Finance, Lucia Liang, to notify the Board of Governors about fee increases for students in the Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (for a new online resource) and in the Engineering Undergraduate Society (to support engineering design teams).

More Constituency News: Representatives from the Arts Undergraduate Society said they will go back to their members in the fall to consult about changes to their constitution before bringing the changes to AMS Council again.

Next meeting: The next regular Council meeting will be at 6 pm on May 29, 2019 in the Michael Kingsmill Forum on the fourth floor of the Nest.
