Kevin Heieis Appointed as Interim Vice-President, Student Life

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) of the University of British Columbia is excited to announce the appointment of Kevin Heieis as Interim Vice-President, Student Life, effective May 1, 2025. Kevin will serve as Interim Vice-President until a by-election is held in September 2025.

Kevin has been engaged with the AMS and the broader student community for many years including serving as an executive of multiple clubs, as a recurring volunteer of the Engineering Undergraduate Society, and most recently as the Special Projects Lead in the AMS Presidents’ Office. Kevin has also dedicated multiple years to bolstering campus spirit through leadership, advocacy, and bringing light to UBC’s challenges with culture by writing in the Ubyssey Newspaper.

The Vice-President, Student Life was created through referendum. In March 2025, the AMS held a referendum asking students to support the “Creation of an AMS Vice-President Student Life.” Students voted overwhelmingly in favour of the position and the referendum passed with 86.7% of votes in support, officially forming the position of Vice-President, Student Life – a first in the history of the AMS.

The position is responsible for advancing campus spirit, promoting student engagement, and strengthening support for clubs, events, and mental health programming. The role also helps coordinate large-scale student events such as AMS FirstWeek, collaborates with external campus groups, and provides training and resources to student leaders.

The Interim Vice-President, Student Life Search Committee unanimously recommended Kevin for the role to AMS Council, which then also voted unanimously at its April 9th meeting to approve his appointment. With the hiring process completed, we look forward to welcoming Kevin to the AMS Executive Team.

Over the next couple of weeks, Kevin will be undergoing the necessary transition to equip him with the relevant knowledge to be successful in the role. He can be contacted at vpstudentlife@ams.ubc.ca.

Please join me in welcoming Kevin into his new role!

Your AMS President,
Riley Huntley
