After 107 years as the Alma Mater Society of UBC, Canada’s largest student union makes a change.
For Immediate Release
April 1, 2023, Vancouver – In November 1915, the students of the new University of British Columbia gathered to create their own student union. Borrowing their name from the Queens University student society, the AMS has been a force for change at UBC for over 100 years.
However, the name has also had its problems. After more than a century of confusion with the AMS of Queens and alumniUBC, the society will relaunching as the All Students Society. Not only will this rebrand mitigate the confusion around the AMS, it better emphasizes the society’s “Student First” philosophy.
The transition from the AMS to ASS is expected to be complete by May 2023.
The beloved AMS Mascot Birb will remain for now, however may be replaced by a Giant Peach in 2024.
