Candidate Bios – AMS President

Get to know the students running for leadership positions in this year’s AMS Elections.

Barry “Bee” Buzzword

Are you tired of campaigns built on vapid words that are never delivered upon? Then Barry “”Bee”” Buzzword (he/him) is the candidate for you! He’s running on the following 15 (if you’re bad at counting) principles:

– Accessibility
-Accountability
-Affordability
-Transparency
-Consultation
-Diversity
-Divestment
-Authoritarianism
-Engagement
-Surveys
-Equity
-Decolonialization
-Inclusion
-Advocacy
-Sustainability
-Collaboration

As for experience, Barry “”Bee”” Buzzword worked on the 2007 Bees vs Humanity lawsuit, earning him critical experience interfacing with lawyers: a vital skill in an age where the AMS President needs to consult with lawyers to shut down referendums and threaten resource groups. To improve AMS workplace culture, Barry “”Bee”” Buzzword will bully all VPs out in the first week, allowing them to be replaced (unelected) with his preferred candidates at the start of the term—rather than partway through.

Drédyn Fontana

“When I first got involved with the AMS, being the first ever executive to be removed was not exactly what I had in mind. I had been inspired by the passion of student advocates before me and I wanted to contribute to changing the university for the better. I thought that if I stayed true to my principles and worked as hard as I could, I would make a difference. In 6 months as VP AUA some of that work included:

  • Supporting the advocacy of constituencies to their faculties
  • Securing a seat on UBC’s Co-Op governing body
  • Breaking the AMS’ survey response record to advocate for changes to Workday

The AMS can be so much more than petty politics and I walk that walk even if it means putting my neck on the line. A student union should be run by students for students, not just whoever’s in charge in a given year. From choosing a headliner for block party to deciding who accesses the food bank, students need more of a say. As President, I’ll walk the walk by:

  • Striking a governance review so you can decide how you want your student union to work
  • Delivering bulk ordered items to clubs and constituencies with food pantries
  • Supporting workers and their right to unionize

Nobody

Nobody should win this election. Nobody deserves to be president. Nobody is good enough.

Riley Huntley

My priority is ensuring the AMS remains stable, responsible, and focused on improving the student experience. As AMS Councillor and Nursing Undergraduate Society President, I’ve delivered real results—eliminating an illegal $540,000 student fee, saving students over $200,000 in textbooks, and reducing fee-based digital tool costs by $60,000 annually. I don’t just advocate—I deliver results.

Every dollar students contribute should go toward meaningful change. I will renew $2.4M in food security funding, fight for more student housing, increase bursaries & awards, and fix the broken AMS room booking system. These aren’t ideas—they’re necessary actions to make student life more affordable and accessible. Academically, I will create a centralized exam and syllabi database, extend course drop deadlines, and improve hybrid learning options. Students should have the transparency and flexibility they need to succeed.

By voting for Riley, you will be electing one of the most experienced candidates in AMS history: student union president, undergraduate society president, AMS councillor, and student senator.
