Candidate Bios - Student Legal Fund Society

Hi everyone! My name is Alex (Musker) and I’m happy to be running with Empower! UBC to be a director of the Student Legal Fund Society (SLFS). Some facts about me- I’m in Engineering, I’m from just outside of Toronto, I play the tenor saxophone, and I won’t drink coffee if it’s not iced. I’m excited to work with the SLFS to improve student representation in legal matters, so please check out empowerubc.ca!

Hey! I’m Alex (Xia) and I’m a student in the Faculty of Forestry. As a member of Empower! UBC, I’m running to be a director of the Student Legal Fund Society, with an aspiration of collaborating with the AMS to advocate for student rights and supporting them throughout their academic journeys. I’m excited to work along my team to influence positive change, especially in the realm of legal aid and university-wide policies. I’m from Toronto and love spending time in nature, playing board games, and hanging out with friends!

Hi, my name is Ella and I’m in the Faculty of Science. I am Métis and I’m from a small town in southeastern BC. I’m running to be a director of the Student Legal Fund Society with Empower! UBC. I love spending time outside skiing and going on walks. Check out empowerubc.ca.

My name is Jacky, and I’m running to continue as a member of the Student Legal Fund Society’s Board of Directors. As an existing director and the current treasurer, I bring valuable experience in managing society finances and navigating the organization’s existing agreements.

Last year, as treasurer, I:

• Revived years-old digital accounts for the SLFS that were still connected to SLFS Directors from many years past
• Regained access to SLFS bank accounts that were still listed as being signed for by the 2021 SLFS BoD
• Fully compiled SLFS obligations and outgoing payments

This year, I promise to fight for:

• Increased board transparency and accountability through more regular reports on what the SLFS does from all directors
• Full transparency into SLFS spending
• A full restoration of the SLFS Litigation Committee to allow it to get back to processing cases
