Get to know the students running for leadership positions in this year’s AMS Elections.

Alex Chui

Hey UBC Science, my name is Alex Chui and I’m running to be your next Science Senator! Now for many of you who don’t know what Senate is, it is the highest academic body of the university and is the final say on many of the changes regarding exam scheduling, curriculum, academic requirements and pre-requisites to name a few. Although there are over 60,000 students, we are represented by only 18 Student Senators, which is why it is so critical to elect those with the experience in UBC leadership to Senate, as it is no longer just a student-run organization but dealing with the senior UBC administration directly.

That is why I am running to be your next Science Senator, because over the past year I have been truly honoured to be one of your Science AMS Representatives, and have built the necessary relationships with various clubs and student leaders in Science to be able to be an effective advocate for all science students. Science deserves a Senator who can deliver the goods and can be a true voice.

So I want to thank you Science, it has been an honour to be one of your AMS Representatives and I hope to count on your vote and support to continue as your next Science Senator

Ananya Gupta

Hi, I am Ananya Gupta, and I’m running to be your next Arts Student Senator, The Arts Faculty is one of UBC’s largest, and yet students often feel unheard when it comes to academic decisions and representation, which is what prompted me to be the VP Academic of the AUS this year where I advocated for increased club funding, secured $10,000 for the Textbook Broke campaign, and run Health & Wellness events such as Bunny Therapy and Exam Care Packages.

As Arts Student Senator, I am committed to improve academic accessibility, affordability, and engagement for Arts students through stronger faculty representation and advocacy.

My platform includes:

  • expanding Open Educational Resources (OERs)
pushing for more financial support towards textbook affordability
  • more lecture capture technology to ensure students have access to recorded lectures, particularly for large courses where attendance and accessibility can be challenging.

I will also work to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) across all Arts courses, ensuring that professors follow inclusive teaching practices that accommodate diverse learning needs.

Vote Ananya for tangible change as Arts Student Senator!

Bardia Mohammadizadeh

I’m Bardia, a second-year Neuroscience student running to be your next UBC Senator.

My platform is built on three key issues that directly impact students like you:
🔹 Stronger Science Representation – As UBC’s second-largest faculty, the faculty of Science is underrepresented in student government. The number of Science students in the Senate doesn’t reflect our population—it’s time to change that.
🔹 Smarter AI Policies – UBC’s vague AI policy forces professors to make their own rules, leading to unnecessary restrictions and outright bans. AI should be a learning tool, not a threat. I will push for clear, student-friendly guidelines and demand free AI tools for students as part of their student bundle, just like Microsoft Office and the UBC library resources.
🔹 More Research Opportunities – Too many talented students struggle to find research positions. I will fight for more funding, more positions, and more opportunities to get students into labs.

Let’s push for real change. Vote for me and let’s build a better UBC together!

Cade Desjarlais

I’m Cade Desjarlais, a first-year law student at UBC, and a proud member of the Metis Nation of BC. I completed my Political Science degree at UBC Okanagan, where I served on the student union for three years, including as VP External and President. During my time at UBCO, I led key initiatives, including securing $2.4M for UBCO’s Food Hub, advocating for a week long, fall reading, and working with faculty.

I’m proud of my work to create a $7M commitment from UBC for student recreation space, secure a $50,000 transportation subsidy, and improve campus food options. I’ve also played a significant role in advocating for student affordability, creating student work-learn jobs, and pushing for the creation of UBCO’s first Black Student Space program.

This work in advocating for students to the UBC Administration has equipped me well to understand how UBC works. I want to continue my advocacy by focusing on increased academic supports for Law students. I want to coordinate with the LSS and the Faculty to ensure career services are meeting student’s needs as the legal landscape changes. This means ensuring we have a plan for the recent provincial changes to the Legal Professions Act.

Daniel Aminbakhsh

As a third year pharmacology student, I am an active member of our unique community. I am passionate about improving the quality of life for students. I believe my work ethics, my attitude and previous experiences in student leadership and Model United Nations have prepared me for the demands of this position.

A vote for me is a vote for:

  • Communication and Transparency
  • Strengthening Ethical Practices at the University
  • Advocacy for Limiting Housing Costs
  • Increasing the Student Housing Supply

I would be grateful if I could receive your vote.

Jacob Cramer

Jacob is in his first year at Allard Law. Jacob has experience advocating for students before university administration and working collaboratively with the university to address students’ needs. He has been actively involved in student advocacy at the University of Winnipeg, serving as chair of the board for the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association and President of the Criminal Justice Students Association. Jacob is running for UBC Senate to improve transparency at UBC and Allard Law. He believes that students should be informed about all issues within the university community.

With his background in advocacy, Jacob is confident in his ability to effectively address critical issues and enhance the relationship between the university and its students. A specific reason for Jacob’s candidacy is to increase oversight of policing and security at UBC. Every student has the right to feel safe while living, studying, or working at UBC. However, this safety must also involve independent and substantive oversight of law enforcement agencies operating on the UBC Vancouver campus. Jacob is committed to working with the university to strengthen the oversight of security and policing.

Mohkam Singh Malik

UBC is one of the best universities in the world, but as students, we still face many challenges. I have worked at all levels of government advocating for youth. I want to take what I’ve learned to push for real change. I want to bring that experience to the Senate to ensure that UBC remains one of the world’s best universities.

My campaign is built on two key commitments: accountability and affordability. If elected, I will advocate for:

  • More open education resources so students pay less for books.
  • Increased funding for research positions and lab equipment to maintain our prominence as a research university.
  • A university-wide unified AI Policy so that no student gets blindsided by rules that change with each professor.
  • We can and should do better as a university. If you agree, join me.
