AMS Referendum

From March 9-13, students like yourself will get the chance to shape the future of the AMS and student experience on campus by voting on issues that impact critical student services, clubs, and student spaces in the NEST.

Demand for AMS Services such as the Food Bank, Peer Support, Safewalk, Tutoring, and Advocacy has increased by 700% in recent years, overextending resources. At the same time, clubs are facing reduced funding and fewer available resources, while the NEST operates at above capacity during peak academic periods.

Vote YES to help stabilize and strengthen the student-led supports and spaces that students rely on throughout their time at UBC.

Why Vote YES?

  • Greater support for Food Bank operations
  • Support for students in urgent mental health and advocacy cases
  • More tables and chairs in the NEST
  • More funding and support for student clubs
  • Support building a new Student Study Lounge in the NEST
  • Better room booking systems and storage for clubs

Without this referendum, the AMS may need to reduce services, further limit support for clubs, and delay critical upgrades to student spaces.

Student Referendum: Demand UBC Cut Ties with Israeli Universities that Uphold Apartheid

AMS Council has endorsed this referendum, standing firmly against apartheid and colonialism. In 2022, AMS Council passed a motion condemning Israeli apartheid in Palestine and supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Israeli universities have been found to contribute to systems that uphold apartheid and maintain close ties with state institutions and the military.

A YES vote supports the AMS calling on the University of British Columbia to cut ties with institutions upholding apartheid, including Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and Tel Aviv University. For the purposes of this referendum, “cutting ties” refers to ending or not renewing academic, research, and institutional partnerships such as MOUs, student mobility agreements, and formal research collaborations with these institutions.

Universities have a responsibility to ensure their partnerships align with principles of human rights and justice. Cultural and academic boycotts helped end apartheid in South Africa, and students have historically played a leading role in movements for global justice. This referendum provides students an opportunity to express their collective voice.
