10 Can’t-Miss Events this January
By Iciar Fernandez
Welcome to 2020! The good news is that you have a full year ahead of you to fulfill the resolutions you didn’t quite commit to last decade; the bad news is that you’ll have to schedule your goals in between early morning lectures and (hopefully not too many) sleepless library nights. The holiday hangover is real. Bounce back without burning out by taking some breaks and experiencing the events that UBC and Vancouver have in store for you this cold and rainy month!
Yoga Rave (January 16th, 2020)
Hosted by UBC REC at an unbeatable price of $0, wear your brightest clothes and engage in this quintessential Vancouverite recreational activity – but make sure to arrive early as space is limited!
Sunday Beer Service (Every Sunday, January 5th – February 2nd)
Drink beer for a good cause thanks to West Craft, a supplier of specialty beverages hosting this unique event at East Van’s Prototype Coffee to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Not a beer enthusiast? Each event will also feature award-winning artisanal coffees and locally made snacks.
Student Leadership Conference (January 11th, 2020)
Explore your abilities, meet amazing individuals in the UBC community and get inspired to drive change at one of the largest student-run conferences in Canada. (Un)filtered, this year’s theme seeks to “deconstruct the “filters” that shape communities and narratives, as well as those that are self-imposed”. Register now!
Sustainable Food: A Fireside Chat (January 23rd, 2020)
If you have been meaning to become more environmentally conscious, you can’t miss this event hosted by Nada Grocery, Vancouver’s first zero-waste grocery store. Learn more about the movement by hearing stories of amazing entrepreneurs driving change in our community, and don’t forget to grab your tickets here!
UBC Aquatic Centre Open House (January 8th, 2020)
Drop-in for free and check out everything that the Aquatic Centre has to offer, which this Wednesday won’t be limited to amazing facilities but also games, snacks, and much more! If being underwater isn’t your thing, check out the rest of the events from UBC Recreation Free Week.
Pastels & Pinot (January 13th, 2020)
Whether you’re looking to improve your art skills or just to have some fun with friends, AMS Events has got you covered. Grab a canvas and paint supplies for $5, and bring some extra cash for a glass of wine!
Winter Classic (January 17th, 2020)
Cheer for the Thunderbirds on their biggest hockey game of the year! Grab your ticket here and don’t miss the pre-game festival, with live music & DJs, food, giveaways and much more!
Science World After Dark (January 23rd, 2020)
Kick off the semester right at the first Science World After Dark event of the year, including a sneak peek of their brand feature exhibition and watching Apollo 11 on the world’s largest dome Omnimax screen! Seriously, visiting a science museum after hours with a cold beer in your hand? Sounds like a plan to me.
Wild Things at MOV (Until January 12th, 2020)
On view until next Sunday only, you can’t miss this nature-filled temporary exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver in collaboration with Nature Vancouver. Turn off your phone and delve deeper into the human connection with nature for a couple of hours – guaranteed to be a good break from the fast-paced city life.
Dear Vancouver II (January 31st, 2020)
Finish off the month at this event produced by AMS Events & The Otherside Collective, a night of culture and music from talent all across the world! Bring your friends (and maybe make some more!) to this art experience that aims to connect various cultures of the world.
