Elections Season is Here!

Everything you need to know about this year’s AMS Elections

By Declan Rounce, 2020 AMS Elections Communications Officer and 4th year Kinesiology student.

Elections season is here! Starting Monday, February 24th, you’ll be seeing a lot about AMS Elections around campus from both the Elections team and individual candidates. As tiring as it can be to constantly be asked to vote, the AMS Elections plays an integral role in shaping your student life at UBC and how you want to leave UBC behind for future students. Allow me to share with you how you have already been affected by past AMS Elections, so you can realize just how important your vote is!

Why should I vote?

Many of the buildings, communities, and policies around campus have been voted on via referendum over the years, which has helped shape our UBC community today. Past referendums that affect you today include approving a fee that supports the Sexual Assault Support Centre, approving a fee to build the AMS Student Nest, reviving the Ubyssey, bringing back the Gallery Lounge, and approving the U-Pass for UBC students. This year, there are important referendums on adding an Indigenous seat to AMS council, and amending some By-Law’s. If you’re curious to know more about these referendums, you can find additional information on our website https://www.ams.ubc.ca/elections.

Then there’s the case of student leaders. On the elections ballot, you have the opportunity to vote on which student leaders represent your best interests! Specifically, you elect candidates into roles of AMS Executives, Senate-At Large, Board of Governors, and SLFS (Student Legal Fund Society) positions. If you are curious about what these positions actually do, you can find out at our website https://ams.ubc.ca/elections. In the past, these student leaders have made many changes at UBC which affect you today. Some examples of this include helping to put forward a referendum to build the Nest, convince the B.C. government to end interest on student loans, and introducing the Academic Experience Survey! Past AMS Executives have even gone on to become Canadian Prime Ministers, in the cases of John Turner and Kim Campbell.

You can learn more about the history of impactful AMS Elections votes by viewing our #YourAMSvote campaign on Facebook and Twitter!

When can I vote?

The official campaign period starts on Monday, February 24th. However, voting happens March 2nd and will close on March 6th at 5pm. This means that you have two weeks to get acquainted with all the candidates’ campaigns and decide who exactly you want to vote for!

How do I vote?

Voting is EASY!!! Seriously, it has never been easier. Voting should take you less than a couple minutes, as it is all done online! That means whether you’re on the bus to class or in an overly long line to get that midday coffee, you can vote right there and then on your phone. All you need to do is head over to www.ams.ubc.ca/vote and use your CWL Login to cast your vote, once voting is live of course.

How do I learn about the candidates?

How each candidate reaches you is up to them! Some may primarily campaign through websites and social media, others may do so in person. However, if you’re looking to get a quick overview of each candidate and their campaign, you can find their individual bios at our website. The Ubyssey also does extensive interviews with each candidate where they go into depth about what exactly they’re campaigning for and why you should vote for them.

What events are taking place?
