From turning food waste into compost for community gardens to transforming discarded wood into everyday products, Enactus UBC is rethinking what sustainability looks like on campus. This year, the club won the AMS Sustainability Award for connecting sustainability with entrepreneurship, innovation and community efforts through student-led projects.
The AMS Sustainability Award recognizes clubs that best demonstrate their commitment to creating environmental and social impact within the UBC community and beyond. Apart from raising awareness, the award celebrates clubs that provide students with opportunities to put sustainability into practice.
“What makes Enactus UBC unique is the opportunity to be involved in hands-on sustainability projects,” said Benjamin Yen, co-president of Enactus UBC.
Among those projects is Terra, which the club revamped into a compost initiative that upcycles food waste from UBC dining halls, including Feast, to support community gardens. The club has also expanded Rekindle, a project that turns wood waste into day-to-day products, such as coasters, to be sold in the UBC bookstore and cafes.
Beyond its sustainability projects, Enactus UBC supports student-led innovation by expanding membership access and providing direct funding for student ventures.
As part of the global Enactus network, the club connects students with members around the world to share and celebrate the impact of their sustainability initiatives.
UBC Botany Enthusiasts was also recognized as a nominee for the award. In recent years, the club has organized events, such as botanical drawing sessions, botanical-themed trivia and ecological restoration work in the Pacific Spirit Regional Park, where members helped restore native plant species including salmonberry and ferns.
The club has also partnered with the UBC Botanical Garden and other undergraduate societies to introduce more students to botanical research and sustainability education.
