Whether it’s introducing new events, connecting students with professionals or investing in future students, undergraduate societies across UBC continue to shape the student experience beyond the classroom. This year, the Kinesiology Undergraduate Society (KUS) and Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (PhUS) have been recognized as recipients of the AMS Constituency of the Year and AMS Small Constituency of the Year awards.
The AMS Constituency of the Year award recognizes undergraduate societies that have made notable contributions to student life, including efforts to support members through new and improved initiatives and make an impact across campus.
This year, the Kinesiology Undergraduate Society (KUS) was named the AMS Constituency of the Year.
Over the past year, KUS created more opportunities for students to get involved, growing its volunteer team to nearly 200 students and introducing new events to support students outside the classroom.
“At KUS, we really strive to give our students the best undergrad experience they can get,” said Isabella Pohang, President of KUS.
The undergraduate society hosted events such as Scrub Crawl, CPR training sessions and KINference, a conference where students could learn from healthcare professionals and build connections in the field.
“We really want to give our students all that they can get, whether that be in different classes and also to just support them along the way,” said Pohang.
The Commerce Undergraduate Society (CUS) was also recognized as a nominee for its involvement in initiatives such as the Sauder Powerhouse project, a new building that will create more space for hands-on learning, collaboration and connections between students, faculty and industry leaders.
“The phenomenal contribution for the Sauder Powerhouse project… will go on to create a legacy for the future of Sauder students,” said Luke Parolin, President of CUS.
With nearly 400 student leaders involved in the undergraduate society, Parolin highlighted its commitment to giving back to future generations of students.
Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (PhUS) was named AMS Small Constituency of the Year.
PhUS was recognized for its effort to support pharmacy students and invest in resources for future cohorts. The undergraduate society secured approximately $40,000 in sponsorship funding and received an additional $30,000 toward renovating the student lounge.
“A big priority for us this year was making sure that future generations of pharmacists and pharmacy students at UBC have everything that we had this year — and to leave things off better than we started,” said Alvin Adams, President of PhUS.
The Vancouver School of Economics Undergraduate Society (VSEUS) was also nominated for the award for its commitment to supporting students’ academic, extracurricular and personal development.
“This year, our student body decided to invest in itself,” said Nour Eid, President of VSEUS.
Through a successful fee increase referendum, the society increased funding for student grants by more than 70 per cent and funding for student clubs by more than 30 per cent.
Eid added that balancing academic life with student support is at the heart of the VSEUS experience.
“One day we can be writing an economic analysis in our Econ Gazette, and then the next day we’ll be dressing up as Santa or handing out flowers on Valentine’s Day,” said Eid.
