Every year, a tremendous amount of literature (fiction, non-fiction, comics, encyclopedias, reference works, etc.) written and produced by Indigenous authors is published and distributed. UBC and its affiliated bookstore constitute a significant pole of Indigenous literature diffusion to a non-Indigenous reading audience. Although the Bookstore is already doing a fantastic job highlighting and putting forward Indigenous authors, we propose a book market at the AMS Nest that is exclusively devoted to them.

Come and shop for books written by Indigenous authors or treating Indigenous topics!

Haida and Squamish Stories and Songs

Kung Jaadee (Roberta Kennedy) is a professional storyteller, educator and published author belonging to the X̱aayda (Haida),  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) First Nations. In her lively storytelling performances, she shares her telling of a few famous Haida legends about Raven (Yaahl), the creator of the world, including Raven’s Feast, which has also been published into a popular kids’ book found in libraries across Canada. She will also share some famous Squamish legends about the sights viewable from Vancouver’s Stanley Park, including Siwash Rock and The Two Sisters (The Lions mountains). Accompanied by her drum, she’ll sing some Haida songs and teach some basic words in Xaad Kil, Haida language. People of all ages will be captivated by these interesting legends that have universal lessons.

A period of reflection, celebration, reconciliation and healing, the ICM is for all of the UBC Community. Several events will take place at the Nest and all over campus throughout the month of October. Please visit the website for updates. You can also check out our social media!
