Looking for a fun day trip and a chance to explore more of Vancouver? Join us on a journey from UBC to the beautiful Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. This guide has everything you need to make the most of your day in the city. 

Getting There: Easy and Budget-Friendly 

Directions from UBC to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden 

  • Transit cost is included in your student U-Pass
  • Take the #14 Hastings bus and get off at West Hastings Street and Carrall Street
    • Walk 1 block from the bus stop to the garden
  • Or take the #4 Powell bus at West Cordova Street and Carrall Street
    • Walk 1 block from the bus stop to the garden

Admission  

  • The garden is open every day (except Mondays) from 9:30AM to 4:00PM  
  • General Admission is $12.00 for students – make sure to bring your UBC student card!

What to Do at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

The garden is a museum built in the style of Ming Dynasty through a remarkable collaboration among local community members, the Canadian government, and artists from China. 

Visit with friends and try the Creature Hunt scavenger game. Pick up a map from staff, then walk along the garden’s pathways, and search for symbolic creatures like bats, turtles, dragons, koi, seahorses, phoenixes, and butterflies. 

Just past the main path near the exit you’ll find a teahouse where you can pour yourself a cup of traditional tea. You may also encounter hands-on cultural activities like brush calligraphy, introductory pinyin practice, or other experiences. Although you have to exit through the garden gift shop, they have some beautiful, culturally inspired items and art pieces that is absolutely worth browsing.  

Where to Get Food Near Dr. Sun Yat-Sen

New Town Bakery & Restuarant

If you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go snack or a sweet treat, New Town Bakery has you covered. With its affordable prices and wide selection of freshly baked goods, it is the perfect place to pick up a bun (or two) for you and a friend on your way home. 

Chinatown BBQ

If you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, Chinatown BBQ is a great spot to hit after the tour. They serve up delicious traditional Chinese BBQ and family-style dishes, which is perfect for sharing with a friend 

Costco Downtown

If you’re heading toward the Expo Line, take a 8-minute walk to Costco, where you can grab their famous $1.50 hot dog combo or choose from a variety of other budget-friendly food court options before transiting home.

Transit-Friendly Hike in West Vancouver

Looking for a fun weekend activity and feeling up for a little adventure? Explore Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver for beginner-friendly hikes for your next day trip. This guide covers everything you need to know, from the must-do’s (and what to avoid) to step-by-step transit directions from UBC, so you are fully prepared for your trip.  

What to Bring

  • Comfortable shoes and clothes
  • Water bottle

UBC to Lighthouse Park: Easy, but be ready for a long ride.  

Step 1: Bus from UBC to Downtown Vancouver

  • Transit cost is included in your student U-Pass
  • 004 Powell: Get off at Granville Street & West Georgia Street
  • 014 Hastings: Get off at Granville Street & West Georgia Street 
  • 044 Downtown (weekdays only): Get off at Burrard Street & West Georgia Street

What to Do While Waiting for the 250 Horseshoe Bay Bus

  • While you’re in downtown Vancouver make a quick stop at Pacific Centre for a bathroom break or to pick up any essentials before heading to West Vancouver like refilling your water bottle or grabbing some snacks for the road.  

Step 2: Bus from Downtown Vancouver to Lighthouse Park

  • Catch 250 Horseshoe Bay at West Georgia Street & Burrard Street
  • Get off at Marine Drive & Beacon Lane 
  • Walk about 17 minutes from the bus stop to the main entrance of Lighthouse Park

There is also parking available if you are driving.  

Before You Start Your Hike:

  • Take a photo of the park’s trail and viewpoint map so you can navigate easily.
  • Use the washroom before you go on a trail

Choose your own path – all the trails are beginner-friendly with clear routes, though you might come across a few that offer a bit more of a challenge.   

Reminders

  • Do not eat any berries you find along the way, even if they look edible
  • On a clear day, you might even spot UBC from one of the viewpoints!  

Phyl Munday Nature House

Right next to the main viewpoint, you’ll find a Phyl Munday Nature House, charming hidden house with exhibits on the park’s biodiversity and history. It’s worth stopping by to explore, learn something new, and sign your name in the guest book before you leave.

Transit-Friendly Berry Picking in Richmond

Nothing screams summer like some really sweet berries, especially if you pick them out yourself. Birak Berry Farm is a transit-accessible farm with a variety of berries such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. Here is your friendly guide for the perfect berry picking experience! 

Getting There: Transit Friendly 

UBC to Birak Berry Farm: 

  1. Catch the #R4 Joyce Station (from Bay 4 UBC) to Oakridge 41st Avenue Station. 
  1. Transfer to the Canada Line – Richmond Brighouse – to Aberdeen Station. 
  1. Transfer to Bay 1 and take the #410  22nd Street Station to No.6 Rd at Cambie. 
  1. Walk North up No.6 Rd until you see the big Birak Berry Farm sign. 

A round-trip with a student U-Pass works best, but if you choose to use your Compass card and a loaded balance, a round-trip is $9.70 for adults. 

Buckets and boxes

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket) or Box  

The farm allows for you to bring your own bucket or box to hold your berries while you pick, but they also sell buckets for $2.50. 

Berries Available:  

  • Blueberries 
  • Strawberries 
  • Blackberries 
  • Raspberries 

(Your bucket will get heavy the more you pick)  

What to Wear

Clothing 

Dress for the weather, but we’d suggest avoiding long pants since the ground can be muddy. 

Shoes 

Wear the appropriate farm shoe. Whether that be a boot or an old sneaker, it’ll get messy. 

Pricing  

Blueberries: $4/lb 

Every other berry: $5/lb 

(You can also purchase the berries pre-picked at a variety of prices) 

Birak Berry Farm is the perfect berry U-Pick activity and super transit friendly for UBC students. It’ll make your summer just a bit sweeter and it’s the perfect excuse to get into baking since you can make anything you want with them.

Transit-Friendly Pride Activity: Really Gay History Tour

Whether you’re a local or new to Vancouver, The Really Gay History Tour is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate Pride. This engaging and accessible tour takes you through the heart of the city, uncovering the queer history behind its streets and buildings.  

Getting There: Easy and Budget-Friendly 

UBC to Tour Meet-point (Meet outside Trees Organic Coffee at 930 Burrard Street ):  

  1. Catch the #044 Downtown bus to downtown Vancouver. 
  1. You could also take any bus from UBC to Downtown Vancouver and walk 6 minutes to the location.  

Transit cost is included in your student U-Pass

Tour Information:  

  • This tour runs every Sunday at 10AM with extra dates for Vancouver Pride in August 
  • The tour is approximately 2 hours 
  • $30 for students 

The tour will start on Burrard Street, and end on the most vibrant street in downtown Vancouver—Davis Street. Once the tour finishes, you will receive a map marked with food and drinks spots around the area, giving you a chance to explore Davie Street and Downtown West End.

Fresco Café

Grab yourself a coffee, a treat, or a quick sandwich to go at Fresco Café, where the tour ends. Right next to the café, you’ll find a vibrant graffiti wall, which is perfect for photos, and just beside it is QMUNITY, BC’s resource centre for queer, trans, and Two-Spirit communities. 

Gringo Davie Street

If you’re craving affordable Mexican food after the tour, Gringo is a fun and colorful spot worth checking out. The vibrant pink decor and laid-back vibe make it a great place to enjoy your Sunday and grab a bite. 

Red Umbrella Cafe 

1707 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC V6G 1W5 

If you’re heading toward English Bay after the tour for some beach time, make a stop at Red Umbrella Café along the way. This cozy spot serves up comforting breakfasts, tasty sandwiches, fresh baked goods, and great coffee. Plus, their breakfast potatoes are some of the best you’ll find.

The Only is a vintage clothing store with great selection that’s always worth browsing. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s a fun place to explore. 

The Fountainhead Pub

For 19+ students looking to grab a beer with friends after the tour, this queer community pub is a great option. The Only has 16 beer taps and it is one of the recommended stops on the tour map.
