The Plan & Pricing 

The AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan was designed by students for students to take care of expenses not covered by basic health care plans, such as British Columbia’s Medical Services Plan (MSP), equivalent provincial health care plans, and private basic plans. The comprehensive Plan covers prescription drugs, dental care, psychologist visits, travel health coverage, vision care, and much more.

International Students. 

You can opt-out of the AMS/GSS Health & Dental plan as it doesn’t provide coverage outside of Canada. If you did not return to Canada in the 2020-2021 academic year, you can opt-out retroactively.  

The special change of coverage period is July 5- July 19 2021, you can only opt out during this time. Consult the Studentcare website for more information.

Eligibility & Self Enrollment & Opt-in 

All AMS and GSS members are automatically enrolled, including full-time and part-time students, international students, and those auditing a course. If you are covered, the cost of the Plan is part of your student fees.  

Exceptions: The following students are not automatically covered by the Plan. but may be eligible to enrol into the plan by filling out the AMS Fee Opt-in form during the Change of Coverage Period.  

  1. Incoming exchange students 
  2. Senior Students (65+) 
  3. Students on a medical leave of absence 
  4. Graduate students on a program-designated leave of absence 

New May intake summer students: You are not automatically covered but may be eligible to enrol through the Studentcare coverage manager. Please consult the “Enroll Yourself Now” page during the Change of Coverage period if this applies to you.  

 

You can also enroll your spouse and/or dependent children by completing the couple/family enrolment process outlined in the Couples & Family Enrolments section.  

If you wish to opt into the Health and Dental Plan, you must opt into all other AMS fees. 



Opt-outs 

Students that are covered by an equivalent Health and Dental plan (ex. parent’s or spouse’s employee benefit plan, or a plan provided by your band council or through Health Canada) can opt-out. Please note that the BC MSP coverage alone is not an equivalent to the AMS/GSS Health and Dental Plan.

CHANGE-OF-COVERAGE PERIOD 

Change-of-Coverage Period 2021-2022 Academic year

The Change-of-Coverage Period is the period at the beginning of the term when you can either opt out or enrol your spouse and/or dependent children in the AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan. These dates are strict, and no exceptions can be made.  

If you start school in Term 1, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from Aug 23, 2021 – Sept 29, 2021 for coverage from Sept 1, 2021 – Aug, 31, 2022 

If you’re a new intake student starting in Term 2, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from Jan 3, 2022 – Jan 28, 2022 for coverage from Jan 1, 2022- Aug 31-2022.  

If you’re a new May intake Summer student, please enrol yourself into the plan during May 6 2022- May 20, 2022 for coverage from May 1 2022- Aug 31 2022.  

Please note that if you graduate in Term 1 and do not return to UBC in Term 2, you will remain covered by the Plan until Aug. 31, 2021. If you have any questions, please contact Studentcare. 

If you’re covered by another plan, you can combine this plan with the AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan to maximize your overall coverage and eliminate out-of-pocket costs. 

HEALTH & DENTAL FEE SUBSIDY 

Full reimbursement of the Health & Dental Plan fee is available on a needs basis from the AMS and GSS through the AMS/GSS Health Plan Premium Assistance Fund.  

Dates and Deadlines:  

Winter Term 1: Aug 23, 2021 – Sept 29, 2021 

Winter Term 2: Jan 3 2022 – Jan 28 2022 

There are not subsidies available for the Summer terms.  

Make sure your application is submitted and received in full before this time; partially-submitted applications will not be considered. You can find the application on AMS CampusBase when it opens.

You can also check your personal claim information at pac.bluecross.ca. Our policy number is 43979 (health, travel, and dental), and your ID number is your student number.
