How to use Safewalk

How to use Safewalk:

Hours of Operation:

  • Summer (May-August): 9:00 PM – 2:00 AM
  • Winter/Spring (September-April): 8:00 PM – 2:00 AM

To make use of Safewalk, either:

  • Call us at 604-822-5355
  • Drop by our office at NEST 1314

You will be asked for your location, desired destination, contact number, first name, and student number (if applicable).

We will send a team of two staff by car or foot to accompany you to your destination. Due to travel times and a high volume of calls, we may not be able to get to you immediately so please wait for us in a safe, well-lit place. If you feel as though you are in immediate harm or danger please call 911.

Safewalk also operates with a no-touch policy. It is not the requirement of Safewalk staff to carry luggage or other large bags during a transfer.

Please read the Safewalk Usage Policy below to see the dos and don’ts of accessing this service.

Safewalk FAQs

How long is the wait?

Wait time may vary from night to night. On busier nights wait times can be up to 45 minutes, but generally, you’re looking at roughly 15 minutes.

Will there be other people in the car except for Safewalk staff and me?

It is possible that other Safewalk users will be in the car at the same time as you. Safewalk provides a safe means of travel for many people on campus, so we may be transporting more than one person at a time.

What is Safewalk’s coverage area?

Safewalk’s office is located inside the AMS Student Nest and we operate anywhere on the UBC Endowment lands (bordered by Blanca street to the east). Please keep in mind, that if you’re calling from further away, your wait time may be a bit longer just to accommodate for the time it takes to walk or drive to you.

Will you take me to a party?

If you are feeling unsafe getting to a party, we’re here for you. Please keep in mind though, that our drivers have the right to refuse service to anyone who cannot clearly consent to receiving a ride/walk accompaniment or cannot care for themselves due to intoxication.

Will you drive/walking accompany me if I am intoxicated?

Safewalk aims to help whoever we can. However, employees reserve the right to deny anyone a ride / walk accompaniment if:

  1. They feel that the client is unable to care for themselves or consent to a trip on their own
  2. The employees or AMS property is at risk of harm

Can I call for a friend who is intoxicated?

It is always nice to help out a friend, but we require that the person receiving the call be able to consent to the ride over the phone prior to the walk/ drive team being dispatched.

Can I use Safewalk with friends?

Yes, Safewalk is now able to accept groups of up to three who are traveling to the same destination.

What do I do if Safewalk staff acted inappropriately?

All comments, reviews and inquiries can be sent directly to the Safewalk Coordinator (Safewalk@ams.ubc.ca) who will review them. We take client comments very seriously and will do our best to respond quickly and resolve the issue.
