2023 Federal Lobby Week
From November 28th to December 2nd, the AMS External Affairs Office (Erin and Priscilla) went to Federal Lobby Week along with the Undergraduates of Canadian Research-Intensive Universities (UCRU) to the Parliament of Canada, in Ottawa, ON. They met with MPs from across parties to advocate for the most important issues for UBC students.

More specifically, UCRU advocated for the following recommendations during Federal Lobby Week:
- Invest in the Canadian Student Grants in order to permanently increase the maximum receivable cost and the Repayment Assistance Plan threshold.
- Develop specialized skill categories for international students within the framework of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, the Student Work Placement Program and the Canada Summer Jobs program
- Amend the Canadian Experience Class program such that international students ar able to participate in a part-time employment experience as full-time students
- Lift the cap on working hours for international students
- Make targeted investments into digital mental health resources for students and youth and invest in Canada’s federal mental health transfer.
Although we’re glad that government officials across the country have warmly accepted and agreed with our ideas, the work isn’t over. Let’s continue the fight. If you’d like to raise an issue or have a question, please contact VP External at vpexternal@ams.ubc.ca.
