Elections and Referendum

Interested in becoming an elected student leader? You’ve come to the right page!

Elections are how students hold UBC and governments accountable and make sure their voices are heard – by electing people they trust to fight for them. It’s students like you, running for leadership positions that make sure students work together and fight for their rights. Student leaders and their ideas can influence every area of student life, while pushing for changes that makes UBC a better university for everyone, yourself included.

I have zero experience running in an election

No problem, there’s zero experience required. Some of UBC’s most successful student leaders got elected with minimal experience and went on to do some amazing things.

What you really need be a great student leader:

  • Be passionate about improving things for students
  • Have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish during your term
  • Take your responsibility as a student leader seriously
  • Be ready to learn a lot and keep learning while you’re in office
  • Put in the time and the work

I’m so not interested in politics or government

That’s perfect! Being a student leader is more of a leadership role than a political one. As long as you’re committed to leading and standing up for students, you’re all set.

Can I take classes while holding an elected position?

It depends on the role. AMS Executive positions are full-time, paid positions, so you’d only be allowed to take 2 courses maximum. Other positions are part-time and may have fewer restrictions on the number of classes you can take. Check with AMS Elections elections@ams.ubc.ca if you’re unsure.
